Sonerai II Empty Weight
« on: Jun 11, 2017 »
Hi Gang,
Sonerai Works (www.Sonerai.com) lists the S-II empty weight as 520 lbs. The owner of an airplane I am considering states his has an empty weight of 620 lbs. 100 lbs overweight seems like a lot to me, but I assume it has a starter and big battery, and that the advertised 520 lbs empty weight probably did not even include an electrical system, true?
I am wondering if I could put the airplane on enough of a diet to get close to 520 lbs. What are the heavy hitters?
How much does the VW starter weigh?
Without a starter, I could reduce battery weight pretty dramatically, is anyone using LiPo technology?
What is a typical S-II empty weight?
Thanks,
Rick

685L is 594lbs empty. Target was less than 600. LiPo battery (2lbs), starter, 2276 engine. Fabric, paint, flooring etc can add excessive weight. 580-620 is probably a realistic range. Less than 580 is possible without a starter, smaller engine, lighter fabric, less paint, minimal flooring, minimal instruments, one seat and any other oz you can eliminate. ???

Under 500 or bust!

Mid-wing SII with front seat and front controls removed. No starter, no battery, no floorboards, handheld radio, minimum instruments, and Oratex fabric.

Check with me next year to see if I hit the mark.

 Oratex fabric.

Check with me next year to see if I hit the mark.

Would also like to know about your Oratex experience -- I made a small test-panel about a year ago, but no real-life experience...

Wilco!

I posted a price list in the shared files. I will update that list and share my costs when I buy my materials. I will also take photos and provide impressions and lessons learned as I go along.

994SP weighed a bit over 600lbs when I purchased it from Scott's estate.  I removed the original 2180 (166lbs) large battery, large 406MHZ ELT, extra wiring, non-essential equipment etc. I installed a 1835 (no starter, early Diehl case, single Slick mag) that weighed 143lbs. I then removed extra floorboards, and battery rack and then weighed it empty. 557lbs, a major victory and the new CG, handling and efficiency improved.

The lighter they are, the better they fly...

When my IIL first flew in 1986, it weighed 525 lbs.  Since then, I've added an oil cooler, secondary ignition, converted from a 1/2" gear to a 5/8" gear, changed from Azusa mechanical brakes to hydraulic brakes, added a 6 gallon aux tank, changed the hand start 1850 to an electric start 2180 with a heavier battery, and recovered and repainted with Superflite polyurethane.  She now weighs 585 lbs.  I won't comment on what happened to my weight since 1986.

I just got mine flying.  I have everything Fred has + a transponder/encoder.  Wings have a lot of filler on them  and the fabric is Poly Fiber.  Weight was 627.  A heavy IIL for sure.  I'm going to strip the wings, recover the fuselage with something lighter, and get rid of anything else non-essential in hopes of coming in under 600.

718lbs empty here. But mine isn't comparable to most others: EJ22 engine is almost half that weight. 10 gal and 14 gal tanks, VFR night rated. That's after shaving almost 30lbs off of her, too. 745 empty when I got it.

623lbs   2180 starter, 8 gallon Aux tank, Cleveland 500x5 wheels and brakes, swiveling tailwheel, two seat single stick. transponder/encoder. Since then upgraded to 5/8 gear, which weighed 5 more pounds than 1/2 gear.
