Heavy 2L
« on: Sep 27, 2017 »
Green 2L for sale on Barnstormers for $8500.   N436WB, built in 1998 by Wesley Blake in Canby, OR.   70TTAE  Revmaster 2100

Empty weight is 689 lbs!!!!!    I'm trying to bridge that to N994SP at 557lbs.
Also, why only 70 hrs if it was built in 1998?   Does it not fly well?

Interested in this airplane, but it won't be cheap to travel from Texas to Oregon to look, so I'd like to do as much remote checking as possible.  I can change engines, remove elec system, etc, to reduce weight, but I'd like to have a good feeling that there's nothing fundamentally heavy about the airframe.

Weight bridge that I can think of from 557 lbs......
1835->Revmaster 2100 - 30lbs?
Starter - 15?
Alternator - 10?
Battery - 25?
3/4" thick landing gear - 10?
Sliding canopy - 5?

that get's me up to 652 lbs.   Where could the other 25 lbs be lurking?   Am I that far off on these estimates?

Could be too much paint, ballast, wiring...
My plane only had 80hrs when i bought it (sans engine) , built in the mid '80's and last flown in '94 (before I restored it) - the reason was an under powered engine and trouble with the mags on said engine at the time...

Ditto congrats!

Looking at the pictures, I see several other "upgrades" that probably add to the weight.

There's a LOT of stuff in the cockpit: an old COM radio in a big box (what else is in that box?), a real full panel, even a Hobbs meter!  And there's a bunch of switches and lights in the sub-panel, which indicates a lot of electrical/electronic doodads which are not readily apparent.

And is that a fuel tank I see in the front seat?  Add the weight of that plus a fuel transfer pump.

Plus I'd bet that slider canopy is more than a 5 pound penalty.  I'd be interested in knowing how that is put together.

But it does look nice (I like that particular shade of green).  I suspect you will find lots of opportunities to lighten it up, if you want to simplify all those add-ons, and get some of your $8K back to boot.

Enjoy!  Even if you do a major make-over like Matt (mhflyit), you'll still be flying long before I ever will.  :'(

Be sure to keep us posted on your new toy!

O'Bill
