14998 Zenith carb on a 1835 VW

My S11 has a Great Plains 1835 and has a Zenith 14998A carb.  It has always run poorly when advancing throttle from idle Through about 2000 rpm. It seems as if it is trying to flood itself especially when I advance the throttle while taxiing.  In trying to troubleshoot this problem I have discovered that the 14998 carb is intended for the 2180 and 2276 engines.  I guess my question at this point is if anyone else has had any experience with this combination?  I should also note here that I have drilled out the jet in the carb bowl in order to achieve and maintain maximum rpm and while that was successful, I think it may have made the problem I have described somewhat worse.  Any input will be appreciated.

I installed a blueprinted GP1835 in 994SP with a Zenith 1821 Carb carefully dialed in by the engine builder/previous owner. It has a very ingenious float bowl mixture control and runs smooth throughout the RPM range. You can't slam the throttle forward from idle to max without a cough, but a 5 second smooth application yields no rough spots.
The builder(a very VW smart guy) was adamant about the proper Zenith Carb being used and the induction filtration being a K&N filter mounted on the Carb inlet and the stock jetting being used. (Look at my photo gallery for a Carb setup pic).

You might consider removing the 14998 in lieu of an 1821/1822 ($350) through several sources or investigate the major difference between the 2. You can always sell the old one online.

I have a Zenith that came with my Hapi 1835 that I never used. Engine or Carb.  I did install the Hapi on the plane when I was building and it started and ran wonderfully!  I just elected to go GP 2180 and Aerocarb.

The information you have given me is helpful and I like the picture of the carburetor installation in your gallery. There are some differences between it and the replacement 3507 though such as the way it bolts on and the throttle and choke levers. It does give me an option to consider though. Thanks
