My new CHT guage
« on: Nov 25, 2017 »
Hi All...I have been looking for a way to monitor the CHT on all cylinders of my  2180 Revmaster, everything that I had found was for ether a single cylinder or a engine monitor for $1000 to $1500. So while I was shopping for a gift on Amazon I found a AZ Instruments 4 Channel K Type Thermometer so i ordered it along with 5 six foot long sensors for a total of $155.00. well today it arrived and after checking it out I was impressed. It was just what I needed, battery powered (4 AA) (I don't have an electrical system) it will record data on the included SD card and many other features you will find very useful...Alarms and such. I hope this helps

Nice but the Revmaster as do most VW derived engines only have two cylinder heads.

Revmaster shows in their manual 2 places per head for CHT sensors, at opposite ends of the head near the sparkplug not in the center.

yes most, not all VW conversions have two cylinder heads but each cylinder can have its own temp probe.

When I got my plane it was reading on a cylinder head stud for each cylinder.  why can't we read under the spark plugs like continental?

The Continental and Lycomings have individual cylinder heads for each cylinder (4,6,8).  Most VW derived engines have two cylinder heads.  Each cylinder head traverses the two cylinders per side.  The assumption is that since the VW cylinder heads are one piece, traversing both cylinders per side that the temperature of the entire cylinder head doesn't vary too much across it.  Therefore, per GPAS recommendation I have one CHT probe per cylinder head under one of the two center studs.  The additional advantage of this installation is that you are not tearing up the CHT probe each time you remove and replace a spark plug.
