Took my daughter up yesterday and after about a hour of flying got to the pattern and my plane sputtered and quit running. Usually not a big deal bit a king air was on final and we were about 2 miles out from the airport because of it. Started trying to restart but nothing so I started looking for a field to land in. Picked it out and set my speed. Upon closer look there was a road next to it . That was going to be my runway . We landed safely and soon after had the police and everyone there. We got the plane running again and got a police escort back to the airport. Interesting day no to find out what stopped the motor.

Dang dude! I'm glad to hear that you were able to land off-airport without any damage to people or property! Outstanding! Icing on the cake was getting the police to let you taxi it with escort back onto airport property.

Hope to read your followup on what caused it soon!

Congrats on the landing. The previous owner of my S2 had a simi;lar thing happen, had to settle for a field. That made be distrust VW engines and I went to a Jabiru 3300 at 127hp. No regrets but not cheap.

Oh if it was the motor I would be worried but suspect a fuel issue.

When I was having my plane inspected by a DAR before first flight, he liked everything he saw. He did suggest one thing. My 3/8 inch fuel tank vent comes out the bottom of fuselage and turns 90 degrees forward. His suggestion was to drill an 1/8 inch hole in the vent tube after the 90 degree turn before it enters the fuselage. That will keep the tank vented in case anything plugs the end of the vent tube. Excellent idea and it costs nothing. Great insurance.

Mine comes out like that. Good idea drilling a hole. Thought about it but have a cover now.

Well took all of 2 minutes to fix the problem. Had a mud dobber make a nest in my fuel tank vent. Now closed off until flight. Luckily just a simple fix .
Same thing happen to me one time taking off at a large airport in my Piper Cherokee. I flew there on my right fuel tank and was there about 30 minutes. In that short time a mud dobber plugged the vent like in the right fuel tank. Took off and got to about 50' and the engine quit. Landed and got stopped before the end of the runway. Why I will never make a intersection take-off. What ever the length of the runway, I want it all.
